Course Aims
To provide candidates with the knowledge, understanding and practical ability to perform/teach advanced skills of orienteering as required by the GSCE syllabus and ? Scotland The course will also include delivery of English National Competition framework for Key stage 3&4 * Candidates will be able to demonstrate safe practice in working with groups of beginners on private ‘safe’ enclosed areas such as Schools Sites or Outdoor Centre Grounds.
Age limit
This course is aimed at teachers, youth sector workers and those working in Outdoor centres. Anyone over the age of 16 may attend the course.
Training recognition
This course is not assessed. Following the training candidates will receive a certificate of attendance. The certificate will show that they have been trained to instruct orienteering on private ‘safe’ enclosed areas such as School Sites and Outdoor Centre Grounds. The wording on the certificate says:
The above named person has attended a British Orienteering Instructor Training course, on how to instruct orienteering on private ‘safe’ enclosed areas such as Schools Sites or Outdoor Centre Grounds. The area must have very clear boundaries, good access, plenty of linear features which may be followed such as fences or paths and be so small as to allow supervision of the participants at frequent intervals. There must be an absence of hazards such as busy traffic, crags, fast or deep water . This training contained no element of assessment and this Certificate is only valid if the holder is operating under the insurance and policies of an ‘Outside Agency’.
Candidates requiring assessment of learning or want to work in local areas and small woods defined by the British Orienteering Safety guidelines will need to progress to assessment for the British Orienteering Instructor Certificate or the Level 1 Certificate in Coaching Orienteering.
Recommended Guided Learning Time
The training is expected to be a minimum of 6 hours contact time.
Prior learning
Candidates should have attended the British Orienteering Leader training before attending this course.
It is desirable for candidates to have competitive orienteering experience before the course. However where this is not possible candidates should try to gain experience at a later date.
